essentiALZ® Certification Support

  • I can't sign in to my account.
    • If you completed the CARES® training and this is your first visit to the Alzheimer's Association Training and Education Center, your email address is already in our system.
    • You will need to log in as an "Existing User", using the email address you used for the CARES® online training program



    • You do not have a password.  To set a password, click the "Create or Reset Your Password".



    • You will receive an email shortly containing a link to set your new password via email.  If you don't see the email within a few minutes, please check your "SPAM" or "Junk" folder.



    • Follow the link to set your password.  Your password must be at least 6 characters long.  Please write down your username (email address) and password for future use.

  • I'm getting an error that says I have not taken Basics and cannot take the essentiALZ Plus exam.
    • If you have not taken a required prerequisite exam you will get an error message like the one below.



    • In order to take any of the essentiALZ Plus exams, you will have to have completed essentiALZ.  If you need to purchase CARES or take essentiALZ, please:
  • I would like to see my results.
    • You have access to your results anytime.  Once you have taken your exam, go to your active training activities.



    • Find the exam for which you want results and click on the name.  You will then have an option to print your certificate (if you passed) or see your results (either way).



    • Click on "Attempts".  Then click on the blue link that corresponds with the exam attempt for which you want results.



    • You will then have a window with your attempts and your results by topic area for each of your attempts.  You can click on the BLUE print button to print a report of your results.




What happens if I fail the exam?

If you fail the exam, don't worry. You have a second chance to take the exam. Follow the instructions below.

  • You are encouraged to review your notes and worksheets and have them with you when you re-take the exam.
  • When you are ready, follow the instructions below and re-take the exam.


What happens if I fail the exam for a second time?

If this was your second attempt and you did not pass, you must follow the instructions below and re-take the CARES Program from the beginning.

As you go through the training again, we recommend that you take your time, complete the activities, watch the videos, use the worksheets available at www.hcinteractive.com/worksheets, and take notes. You may use your notes and worksheets when taking the exam.



Individual 10-day Licenses

Each individual product key is only good for one (1) person using CARES one (1) time. If you have failed the exam for a second time, please follow these instructions:

  1. Purchase the CARES training again at www.hcinteractive.com.
  2. When you complete your training modules for the second time, a new certificate will be issued.
  3. Return to the Alzheimer's Association eLearning website at www.alz.org/essentiALZexam.
  4. Important: To re-take the exam, you will need to log into your original "eLearning" account. Make sure you use your same e-mail address as the username and the same password that you used for your first two attempts at the exam.
  5. You will again have two tries to pass the test with a score of 90% or higher.



Site Licenses

If you are using a multi-user or "unlimited user" site license, please follow these instructions:

  1. Go to www.hcinteractive.com/login and log in to CARES as an Existing User.
  2. The page will indicate you have already completed the program.
  3. Click the "Start Over" button to complete the CARES training program a second time. We recommend that you take your time, complete the activities, and take notes. You may use your notes when taking the exam.
  4. When you complete your training modules for the second time, a new certificate will be issued.
  5. Return to the Alzheimer's Association eLearning website at www.alz.org/essentiALZexam.
  6. Important: To re-take the exam, you will need to log into your original "eLearning" account. Make sure you use your same e-mail address as the username and the same password that you used for your first two attempts at the exam.
  7. You will again have two tries to pass the test with a score of 90% or higher.



  • I need to print my certificate.
    • You have access to print your certificate at any time.  Once you have taken your exam, go to your active training activities.



    • Find the exam for which you want the certificate and click on the name.  You will then have an option to print your certificate by clicking on the purple button.



    • Once your certificate appears on your screen, you can print the document or save it to your computer.

  • My certificate has expired.  What do I do?
    • EssentiALZ certification is good for two years.  Your certification expiration date is printed on your certificate.



    • We offer recertification courses for 50% off the regular price of training and certification.  For more information on how to do this and to purchase the training and certification, visit HealthCare Interactive.
    • This dedicated recertification course that has been designed so the length of time required to take each module is shorter, reducing the amount of time away from your work.
    • If you originally completed the training at the request of your employer and are still employed by the same employer, please ask your administrator for the renewal license product code.
    • If you purchased the training program, please visit www.hcinteractive.com/recertification to buy the new recertification course.
    • Once you have completion the training, follow the instructions to return to the Alzheimer's Association Training and Education Center to take the essentiALZ recertification exam using the same username and password as you originally used.

  • Worksheets
    • There are worksheets for each module available on the HealthCare Interactive website.  These worksheets can be completed while you go through the training and then used as you complete your exam.

  • While you are taking the exam
    • There are two features that may be helpful if you get "stuck" on a question.  On each question, you will see a box in the top left corner with options to "pin for follow-up" or "my notes".
      • Pin for Follow-Up - By checking this box, you can earmark a question for follow up.
        • Once you have completed your exam questions, you will have a chance to review "pinned" questions before you submit your answers.



      • My Notes - Click the "My Notes" button if you are not sure about an answer and want to jot down your thoughts as you move on to the next question.



        • Once you click on the "My Notes" button, you have some "virtual scratch paper" to record your thoughts.



        • When you have completed the exam, you will have a chance to review your "My Notes" prior to submitting your exam.  On the "Submit answers" page, questions that have notes will be identified by a 'notes' symbol.  You can click on that to return to the question (& your notes) or choose to submit your answers now.



  • Archive
    • If you find that your "Training Activities" page is too long or full of courses, you can use the "archive" feature to keep your information available, but not only visible when you want to see it.



    • From your Training Activities page, click on "Archive".
    • This will hide the exam/course from your page.  When you want to retrieve that information to print your certificate, review results or other, click on "View archive" from your "Training Activities" page.



    • You will then see the exam/course and all options.



    • If you want to return the exam/course to your "Training Activities", click the "restore" button.
