Neuromodulatory Subcortical Systems PIA and The Eye as a Biomarker for AD PIA: Neuromodulatory Correlates of Pupil Dilation

Recorded: August 17, 2021

Subcortical neuromodulatory nuclei are the first brain regions that accumulate Alzheimer’s-related tau pathology. While the small size and location of these nuclei has long hampered in-vivo imaging, recent findings link luminance-independent changes in pupil dilation to neuromodulatory activity. Evidence for a noradrenergic, cholinergic and serotonergic role in the modulation of pupil dilation across animals and humans is discussed.
