Neurotransmitters synthesized in subcortical nuclei, including norepinephrine, serotonin, acetylcholine, and orexin regulate most brain functions. These neuromodulatory subcortical systems already become dysfunctional in the first stages of Alzheimer’s disease. Yet, we still know little about the NSS in AD and AD-related disorders.
