Dementia Clinical Care Education Series - (CME, CNE, CE)

Education Activity Description: This four-part continuing education series outlines strategies for dementia care including: Epidemiology, Diagnosis, Assessment and Mild Cognitive Impairment. Concluding with case presntations for real-world application.

Estimated time to complete activity: 20-25 minutes per module [0.25] credit hours per module

Learning Objectives:

Module 1 Introduction to Dementia

  • Discuss epidemiology of dementia
  • Identify and explain the benefits of early detection and diagnosis of Mild Cognitive Impairment and Alzheimer’s disease
  • Recognize common risk factors for cognitive impairment
  • Review treatable causes of cognitive dysfunction
  • Define normal aging/pre-clinical versus mild cognitive impairment versus dementia
  • Review types of dementia
  • Identify distinguishing symptoms of Alzheimer’s that separate it from other cognitive disorders 

Module 2 Diagnostic Criteria for Mild Cognitive Impairment, Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias 

  • Define diagnostic criteria for Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI)
  • Define diagnostic criteria for Alzheimer’s disease (AD)
  • Explain the clinical manifestations of vascular dementia (VD), dementia with Lewy Bodies (LBD), Parkinson’s disease dementia (PDD) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) 

Module 3 Clinical Assessment of Cognition

  • Describe the process of assessing cognition
  • Identify cognitive screening and assessments tools
  • Establish a diagnostic pathway to diagnosis
  • Discuss the role of specialists (neurologists or neuropsychologists) in the assessment process
  • Define a communication plan between clinician team members

Module 4 Clinical Case Presentations

  • Apply dementia diagnostic criteria to individuals presenting with cognitive impairment
  • Explore techniques for initiating conversations of cognition
  • Utilize a person-centered approach to disclose a diagnosis

Target Audience:   This activity is intended to meet the educational needs of primary care clinicians including internists, family physicians, radiologists, neurologists, nurse practitioners and physician assistants who are seeking additional education in the assessment, diagnosis and ongoing health care of patients with cognitive impairment and dementia.

Statement of Purpose: A practice gap is the difference between what healthcare professionals should or could be doing and what they are currently doing. Using current evidence based to bridge the gap between patient care and care recommendation, ensuring healthcare professionals are not only aware of current practice but are utilizing them in patient care settings. This will be accomplished by increasing awareness and knowledge of new guidelines on the impact that physical activity, diabetes and obesity, vascular risk, and tobacco use can have on brain health/cognition.

In support of improving patient care, this activity has been planned and implemented by the Postgraduate Institute for Medicine and Alzheimer's Association.  Postgraduate Institute for Medicine is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
